An Kindness of People We Don't Know: How a Man I Only Just Encountered Helped Me Obtain the Role That Changed My Life

In the late 1980s, I was beginning a low-cost journey to the European continent with a travel partner. Since my friend was interested in enrolling in graduate studies in New York, we had planned a two-week stay there on the way to London.

We got to the postgrad residence, a large ten-floor structure on the UWS named International House. Setting down our luggage, we went directly to the canteen, where we picked up meals, took a seat, and started talking to people eating there.

Adjacent to my seat was an Iraqi man pursuing an engineering degree at a prestigious New York university. He wanted to know what I my profession was, and I explained that I had newly finished with a scientific background and had been conducting research involving microscopic analysis.

He pointed out that there was an microscopy facility at Columbia University – right next door to the school of engineering, which was why he was aware of it. He suggested that I should apply for a position with them. I laughed it off, telling him that I was soon departing to Europe and, additionally, I didn’t have a US visa.

The next day I toured the city, coming back to the dining hall that after dark. The man from Iraq came up to me and informed me that he had organized a discussion for me with the head of the electron microscope unit at Columbia. Given that he had taken the effort, I showed up for the discussion – but straight off explained to my prospective employer that I was without a work permit, so I was probably wasting her time.

As is common in NYC – a place where everything seems achievable – she said: “We can make that happen. When can you start?” I didn't board the aircraft to London.

I was employed there for 36 months. One of the benefits was that I also received complimentary education at Columbia, and I seized the chance to complete a master’s of international affairs.

I never saw that student again and I don’t even know his name, but his incredible act of kindness transformed my future in multiple respects. I lacked the confidence or self-assurance to contact anyone at an prestigious college and request employment. And, I had long dreamed to take classes in another country, but wouldn't have been able to pay for it without that educational benefit.

What's more, that role at the university resulted in a role in Europe where I got to know my wonderful partner, with whom I am raising a family of four kids. It was a total sliding doors moment. That kind stranger changed my trajectory in life, and I’m always appreciative.
